From Seed to Food. Cooperation, sustainable agricolture and food security
Food security and sustainable agricolture are among the most urgent problems that the International Community has to face in its post2015 Agenda. In the world, demand for food increase above 4,5% per year while food supply growth only by 2%.
According to the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), 70% of the poor population lives in rural areas where a fair knowledge and adeguate implementation of agricultural activities could improve their living standards. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared that in 2050 global population will reach 9 billions and food production would have to increase by 60% to satisfy such needs.
Agriculture cooperatives, that counts by almost 50% of the global agricolture, could play a key role in the fight against poverty and in guarantying food security. Moreover, to promote sustainable growth and development in partner countries, best practices of the Italian business model of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is easily reproducible, as it is more similar to form of organisations that already exists in those territories.
The event From Seed to Food organised by the Alliance of Italian Cooperatives in partnership with Direction General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and with CIHEAM- Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, will take place October 18th in the Great Hall of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute in Via Ceglie 9, Valenzano – Bari from 8.30 am to 1.30pm.
