WLZ Addressing Women Farmers Rights in Zimbabwe
Project Objectives
The programme facilitated acquiring of land by women as groups, individually and jointly with their husbands. 200 women were allocated irrigation plots in Shurugwi, while 10 single women got land registered in their own names. 23 women acquired resettlement land after WLZ training to district stakeholders on gender and women's land rights. In Wedza a group of 200 women were allocated land to build a value addition centre for their crops. Waiting lists with close to 300 names of single women applying for land were submitted to respective district land committees for consideration. More than 3,000 community members were reached out, mobilised and targeted with information on Women's land and other rights.The study circle concept has resulted in some study circle members harvesting 3-4 tonnes of maize on one hectare plots through conservation farming. 225 study circle groups were mobilised with an average of 2,700 beneficiaries (2,300 women and 400 men). A total of 741 women and 129 men were trained in leadership, lobby and advocacy.
Summary
We Effect supports the 'Women Farmers' Rights in Zimbabwe programme', which aims for equitable access to, control and ownership of land and related productive resources and benefits, with enhanced sustainable and productive land use by women and their families. WLZ works primarily with advocacy together with its affiliated member organisations, which include the main farmers' organisations in the country. The programme objective is to reduce gender discrimination in access to ownership and control of land, enhanced sustainable land use and improved livelihoods among women and their families.
