Project Objectives

The key outcomes of the Supporting Co-operatives in Malawi programme are:

1. To provide large-scale training opportunities for members and potential members of co-operatives, this will enable them to improve their practical, business and governance skills.

2. To provide a support and mentorship service to existing and start-up co operatives;

3. To provide advice on supply chain linkages;

4. To establish a national structure to support co operatives which is “owned” by the co operative movement itself.

Summary

The ‘Supporting Co-operatives in Malawi’ programme is funded by the Scottish Government and focuses on organisational and institutional capacity building for farmer co-operatives in Malawi and adheres to both the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) framework (http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/). The key outcomes of the Supporting Co-operatives in Malawi programme are:

1. To provide large-scale training opportunities for members and potential members of co-operatives, this will enable them to improve their practical, business and governance skills.

2. To provide a support and mentorship service to existing and start-up co operatives.

3. To provide advice on supply chain linkages

4. To establish a national structure to support co operatives which is “owned” by the co operative movement itself.

The three year programme commenced in September 2012. A local project manager is in place, along with three field staff who are now delivering training in the Northern, Central and Southern regions of Malawi.
