A silent emergency that caused thousands of deaths
Project Objectives
Health care at the hospital in Lubutu, to guarantee the population free access to quality care.
Summary
The project involved the province of Maniema, Democratic Republic of the Congo, a reality where most of the population lives below the poverty line and is exposed to tropical diseases whose treatment is only possible via an external support . For this Doctors Without Borders in 2006 took over the hospital in Lubutu , with the aim of ensuring the local population (about 100,000 people) with free access to quality care . The project has allowed us to restructure the hospital and to buy new equipment for diagnostics, as well as ensuring a steady supply of drugs , thus enhancing the activities and services offered by the hotel .The project has also enabled MSF to provide support in 4 health centers in the region. At the end of 2011, the capacity of the hospital had reached a height of 160 beds, while the mortality rate in the region was reduced to a fifth of that of 2005.
