Project Objectives

The project aims to develop, up-scale and mainstream sector own control systems in order to contribute to the promotion of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and SHG federations in such a way as to realize their full potential for engaging in microfinance and sustainable livelihoods.

Summary

The Regional Project for Promoting Cooperative Self-help Organizations in Asia consists of project activities in 7 countries: Cambodia (DGRV country office), Myanmar (DGRV country office), Laos (DGRV country office), Vietnam (DGRV country office), Thailand, Philippines and India (partnering with APMAS).

In India DGRV in cooperation with the local partner APMAS is supporting the introduction and development of sector-own control systems (SOC) for self-help groups (SHG) and their federations. Based on the experiences and practices of German Cooperatives adapted solutions of internal control and regulation mechanisms have been elaborated and introduced in a pilot project in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile this model and model elements are been taken over by SHG structures in other parts of Andhra Pradesh and other Indian states. The activities focus on: training and consultancy for strengthening the cooperatively structured supervision association "Paryavekshan Samakhya"; capacity building and advisory services to various agencies for up scaling SOC in other States of India; consultancy in further developing and implementing self regulation systems including stabilisation systems for self-help groups.

The project is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
