To get a good basic understanding about the gender challenges in the region, within our prioritized areas and among our partner organizations. Four FOFPI programme partners namely Cotton Association of Zambia, Zambia National Farmers Union, Farmers Union of Malawi and UNAC in Mozambique, who were supported to strengthen internal capacities for gender mainstreaming, have gender experts within the organisation and part of staff compliment. And by the end of 2013 the five partner organisations had developed gender policies and implementation plans. Additionally, four women’s rights organisations, WFC in Zambia , WLSA in Zimbabwe, WOLREC in Malawi and MULEIDE in Mozambique were identifies and included as new partners under GEP.

Summary

The programme was developed in 2013 which was a preparatory phase for the longer term programme. It is designed to build on lessons learned from gender mainstreaming activities facilitated by We Effect and supported in related programme activities. The programme addresses the need for the leadership of the organisations to embrace and commit to the aim of gender mainstreaming. To make this possible it was recommended, providing evidence of the potential contribution of women and conduct gender self-assessments that will identify the gender gaps in the governance and operations, support the integration of gender equality within organisation structures and strategic plans, support the building of capacity within We Effect as well as partner organisations for gender mainstreaming, and support development of leadership skills with women farmer leaders. The programme objective is “Empowered partner organizations addressing gender equality and the fulfillment of women’s right in Southern Africa”. Indicators to measure impact are: 1) Integration of women living poverty in new groups, existing organisations and networks,2 ) Public policies, laws and institutional structures promoted to guarantee gender equality and women’s rights,3 Increased lobbying by partner organizations for policies protecting land rights in particular women,4) Organised women empowered politically, economically and socially,5) Trained partner organisations able to apply practical implementation of gender mainstreaming,6) Men’s attitudes and behaviour supports gender equality individually and collectively.
