A logistics system for fresh food for Sahrawi refugees. Pilot project for the strengthening of logistical capacity of Mezza Luna Rossa Sahrawi.
Project Objectives
Improving the quality of food among the Sahrawi refugee population and strengthen the technical capacity of local preservation and storage of fresh produce.
Summary
The project “A logistics system for fresh food for Sahrawi refugees” represented a concrete response to the needs arising from the situation of chronic emergency of the Sahrawi refugee population for over 35 years in the Algerian desert. Food shortage not only considering the quantity but above all, the quality (absence of fresh products and special targeted at vulnerable groups), has motivated the intervention that was agreed between the Region of Emilia -Romagna and the Presidency of Mezza Luna Rossa Sahrawi - humanitarian organization responsible for the management of food aid for refugees - while being coordinated by the CISP (International Committee for the Development of Peoples). Thanks to the contributions of all partners, it has been possible to provide and operate 4 refrigerated containers, located in the tent city of destination of food, to promote the availability of fresh food aid on an ongoing basis, to provide tools and training for cargo storage to the local staff for maintenance of containers. The project has garnered the interest of the UN to replicate the pilot project by sending new containers .
The project was later expanded with additional funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region and installed 3 additional containers and a generator of energy for their maintenance.
