Project Objectives

Summary

Young workers in the port of Mombasa in Kenya generally have very poor working conditions in relation to wages, discrimination, employment security, working environment etc., and the unions are not good at helping young people to improve their conditions. Therefore, the project aims to contribute to better working conditions for 7,000 young workers by 1) increasing young people's knowledge and awareness about their labor rights, basic working environment and health and 2) to strengthen the three relevant trade unions to focus on young people's problems. The project's local partners include the Dock Workers Union (DWU) Kenya and the Kenya Seafarers Union and Kenya Shipping Clearing and Warehousing Union. DWU is the project's main partner as primarily responsible for the local implementation and anchoring of the project.
