Project Objectives

Improving the socio-economic condition of the population of the area of Hermel, in the Bekaa Valley, through the enhancement of the environmental conditions of the Orontes rive impacted by aquaculture

Summary

It has been realized a phytodepuration pilot plant in a trout farm on the Assi river, in the district of Hermel- Bekaa valley, in order to evaluate its replicability and spread the local awareness on the importance of reducing the impacts of human activities on the local ecosystem. The ecosystem of the area presents good characteristics for trout farming but results to be strongly under pressure from anthropogenic activities (trout farming, agriculture and urban waste water). The phytodepuration systems are particularly effective in reducing the organic pollution caused by trout farms, and specifically to treat the pollution contaminants detected in the Assi river. The phytodepuration system has been chosen in front of alternative technology for its low building costs, low maintenance costs, low skills required for maintenance and high adaptability to the context considered. The functioning of the pilot plant has been tested through a monitoring plan of chemical and physical analysis. Lega Pesca as subcontractor has been in charge of building the phytodepuration plant (constructed wetland system) to reduce the impact of aquaculture farms. Moreover Lega Pesca has carried out the monitoring though scheduled analysis of the water and the sediments, and will elaborate the relative data on the impact of the plant to analyze its replicability and the potential improvements. Moreover Lega Pesca has trained around 15 local experts (selected among trout farmers, local government experts, etc) on building and managing the phytodepuration plants.
