Project Objectives

Review of the cooperative sector in Cyprus and development of appropriate recommendations for its relaunching.

Summary

Review of the cooperative sector in Cyprus and development of appropriate recommendations for its relaunching. Funded by the European Commission - Structural Reform Support Service. Tasks:

a) Evaluate the existing cooperative sector in Cyprus, identify and make recommendations on organisational restructuring and modernising of the operations of cooperatives on the basis of opportunities that exist in the existing and new business sectors.

b) Review the existing cooperative legal framework in Cyprus for simplifying, codifying and modernising it (objectives, cooperation, financial structure, supervision/audit, development and governance of non-credit cooperative societies). Provide recommendations for improvements, aiming to encourage and facilitate the establishment of a more effective and sustainable cooperative sector in Cyprus.

c) According to the findings and recommendations, draft amendments to the Cooperative Laws and Rules.
