Project Objectives

Reduce disease transmitted by water in the Nippes Department through support to the activities of the local institutions DINEPA and DPC, supply of tools for control and treatment of water for a better containment of and response to infectious disease.

Summary

Direct project beneficiaries included the residents of the three communities inside the Nippes Department (l’Asile, Fond des Negres, Paillant), while indirect beneficiaries include the entire urban and rural population of the Nippes Department.

The activities include:

• Construction/reinforcement of at least 6 ORPs (Oral Rehydrating Points) in the department, providing hygienic structures;

• Organization of training sessions on cholera prevention, water treatment, and the use/production of chlorine as well as its sale for the DPC, in collaboration with the DINEPA;

• Implementation of a substantial awareness campaign through the DPC network of volunteers in all Departments dealing with: 1. water treatment 2. use of chlorine on a household level 3. protection of water sources; DPC staff training about chlorine production and use, and provision of quality water kits;

• DINEPA staff training about water quality control and monitoring, and provision of quality water kits;

• Support of DINEPA in the development of a departmental level plan for monitoring and water strategy.
