Feed the change: fight child malnutrition in Burkina Faso
Project Objectives
To fight child malnutrition in poor households during the food crisis in 2012 by securing and diversifying family livelihoods.
Summary
In response to the severe food crisis that Burkina Faso had to deal with, GVC’s project in the districts of Ouargaye and Zorgho consisted of the following activities: four nutrition health units created and 78 local health facilities equipped for detection and outpatient treatment of malnutrition; a comprehensive capacity-building training program for health personnel and community health workers as well as for over 1,200 volunteers who have themselves become hygiene and health promoters; 9 door-to-door screening campaigns which allowed social workers to detect 6000 children at fatal risk. This specific activity was implemented in 450 villages and the action targeted over 500,000 children who received medical assistance and 1600 families who received food and cash assistance. The project also included an awareness-raising campaign on nutrition featuring culinary demonstrations which involved 7000 people and which were organized in the villages with the aim of spreading nutritional education.
